Packages that were added to Scientific Linux

We have added several packages to Scientific Linux that are not found anywhere on the Enterprise releases.

(SL 5.1) 915resolution
Summary :915resolution is a tool to modify the video BIOS of the 800 and 900 series Intel graphics chipsets. This includes the 845G, 855G, and 865G chipsets, as well as 915G, 915GM, and 945G chipsets. This modification is necessary to allow the display of certain graphics resolutions for an Xorg or XFree86 graphics server. 915resolution's modifications of the BIOS are transient. There is no risk of permanent modification of the BIOS. This also means that 915resolution must be run every time the computer boots inorder for it's changes to take effect.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.1) alpine
Summary :Alpine is a tool for reading, sending, and managing electronic messages. Alpine is the successor to Pine and was developed by Computing & Communications at the University of Washington.
This is installed by default in the text-internet group. So if a user installs the default groups, it is installed by default.

(SL 5.3) aufs
Summary: Aufs is a stackable unification filesystem such as Unionfs, which unifies several directories and provides a merged single directory. Aufs is an entirely re-designed and re-implemented Unionfs
This is not installed by default.

cfitsio
Summary : CFITSIO is a library of C and FORTRAN subroutines for reading and writing data files in FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) data format
Added for the astonomy community. This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.2) dkms
Summary: This package contains the framework for the Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) method for installing module RPMS as originally developed by Dell.
This is not installed by default. There are no dkms kernel module packages in the standard Scientifc Linux release.

dropit
Summary : removes directories entries from a PATH shell variable
Added for those script writters who need a easy, consistant way to edit the PATH variable. This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.3) fftw
Summary: FFTW is a C subroutine library for computing the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) in one or more dimensions.
This is not installed by default.

FUSE
Summary : With FUSE it is possible to implement a fully functional filesystem in a userspace program. fuse modules fuse-smb and fuse-sshfs are included as well.
(SL 5.4) Fuse is now provided by The Upstream Vendor. So it is no longer "added" but merely part of the release. But fuse-smb and fus-sshfs are still "added"
fuse-smb: you can seamlessly browse your network neighbourhood as if it were on your own filesystem. Only when you're accessing a share is a connection made to the remote computer. This also allows users to mount smb shares using kerberos.
fuse-sshfs: A FUSE-filesystem client based on the SSH File Transfer Protocol. On the client side mounting the filesystem is as easy as logging into the server with ssh.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.5) gnuplot42
Summary: gnuplot42 is the 4.2 version of gnuplot. It has several functions that are not available in the SL5 gnuplot 4.0 version.
This is not installed by default.

graphviz
Summary : A collection of tools and tcl packages for the manipulation and layout of graphs (as in nodes and edges, not as in barcharts).
Added for the various scientists who use this. This is not installed by default.

gv
Summary : A X front-end for the Ghostscript PostScript(TM) interpreter.
Added because it's a nice way to look at postscript documents. This is not installed by default.

icewm
Summary : Fast and small X11 window manager
Added because we needed a lightweight modern window manager. There are some machines that just don't have much CPU and/or memory, and both KDE and GNOME can really slow these machines down. This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.4) imlib
Summary: Imlib is a display depth independent image loading and rendering library.
This is not installed by default.

iwp2100 & ipw2200 firmware
Summary : Firmware for the Intel´┐Ż PRO/Wireless 2100 and 2200 Driver.
Added because we have the network drivers, but not the firmware that went with them. These are installed by default.

ipw3945 Removed SL 5.4 - Replaced by iwlwifi-3945
Summary : ipw3945 firmware, kernel module, and deamon needed to make the Intel ipw3945 wireless work.
This was added because many new laptops have this wireless chipset. This is not installed by default.

Summary : Firmware (ucode) for Intel wireless cards. The ucode is required to be present on your system in order for the Intel Wireless WiFi drivers for Linux to be able to operate on your system.
This is installed by default.

jdk
Summary : This packages is the java sdk from sun.
Added because many developers and users wanted it. Installed by default when the graphical internet is selected.

(SL 5.2) kdeedu
Summary: Educational/Edutainment applications for KDE. kstars is part of this package.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.4) lua
Summary: Lua is a powerful light-weight programming language designed for extending applications. Lua is also frequently used as a general-purpose, stand-alone language.
This is not installed by default.

madwifi Removed SL 5.4 - Driver now in kernel
Summary : madfifi is the Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi, a linux device driver for 802.11a/b/g universal NIC cards - either Cardbus, PCI or MiniPCI - that use Atheros chipsets (ar5210, ar5211, ar5212).
Currently this is for i386 only.
This was added because many wireless cards use this chipset. This is not installed by default.

Summary : Expanded multimedia support
Added for those users who want mp3 support. These are not installed by default.

ndiswrapper

Summary : a loadable kernel module that "wraps around" NDIS (Windows network driver API) drivers. This does not work for all drivers, it also does not contain any Windows network drivers.
Added for those users who need to use it. This is not installed by default.

nedit
Summary : NEdit is a GUI text editor for the X Window System and Motif.
(SL 5.3) Nedit is now provided by The Upstream Vendor. So it is no longer "added" but merely part of the release.
This is installed by default if Editors is selected.

(SL 5.1) NumPy
Summary :NumPy derives from the old Numeric code base and can be used as a replacement for Numeric. It also adds the features introduced by Numarray and can also be used to replace Numarray.
This is not installed by default.

Summary : OpenAFS distributed filesystem
Added because many educational and research centers around the world use AFS as some type of central file system. This is not installed by default.

Summary : System-level performance monitoring and performance management.

pine Removed SL 5.2 - Replaced by alpine
Summary : Commonly used, MIME compliant mail and news reader
Added because about 25% of our users use Pine. There was a very high demand for it. This is not installed by default.

R
Summary : R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R.
Added for the scientific community. This is not installed by default.

r1000 Removed SL 5.2 - Driver now in kernel
Summary : Linux device driver released for RealTek Ethernet controllers RTL8169S/SB/SC, RTL8168B, and RTL8101E
Added for those users who need to use it. This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.4) rt61pci-firmware

Summary: Firmware (ucode) for Ralink wireless
These are installed by default.

(SL 5.3) scipy
Summary: The SciPy library is built to work with NumPy arrays, and provides many user-friendly and efficient numerical routines such as routines for numerical integration and optimization.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.3) suitesparse
Summary: suitesparse is a collection of libraries for computations involving sparse matrices.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.1) tidy
Summary :When editing HTML it's easy to make mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a simple way to fix these mistakes automatically and tidy up sloppy editing into nicely layed out markup? Well now there is! Tidy is a free utility for doing just that. It also works great on the atrociously hard to read markup generated by specialized HTML editors and conversion tools, and can help you identify where you need to pay further attention on making your pages more accessible to people with disabilities.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 5.2) XFS SL 5.4 - x86_64 Driver now in kernel
Summary: XFS is a highly scalable, high-performance journaling filesystem that provides rapid recovery from system crashes.
This is not installed by default.

Added for those users who prefer yumex over the default pirut. This is not installed by default.

Added for those users who want to use it. The one plugin, kernel-module, is built into the S.L. version of yum. These are not installed by default.
