SL 4.x Installation Steps
Installation Instructions
- Network Install: Note that the very first part of the install is done in text mode. This is because
we simply cannot fit the graphical installation onto the initial boot image. Once you connect to the
installation server it will try to startup the graphical install. Until that point, here are a few
things to note.
Use the Tab/Alt-Tab keys to navigate between elements.
The <space> key selects/deselects items. - CDROM Install: The first cdrom is bootable if your BIOS is configured to boot from cd-roms.
- Text Install: For either network or cd-rom install, type in 'linux text' and then return at the very first step.

NFS, FTP, or HTTP Setup(Network install only)
You should point your machine to your network installation server.
Depending on your network installation server, the path may be different. You should check to make sure you put the correct path in.
We are using i386 as an example, depending on what you are installing, you can replace that with x86_64 or ia64. But you
must have gotten your installation media from the appropriate images area, because an i386 network install cd will not work with
x86_64 install directory, or vice versa.
NFS server name: your.nfs.install.server
Scientific Linux directory: /export/linux/scientific/4x/i386
FTP server name: your.ftp.install.server
Scientific Linux directory: /linux/scientific/4x/i386
HTTP server name: your.http.install.server
Scientific Linux directory: /linux/scientific/4x/i386
[OK]
At this point, the installation try's to startup the graphical installation, unless you are doing a text
installation. If for some reason the
installation is unable to startup the graphical mode, then it will run the installation in
text mode. Although this is a rare occurance, it does happen from time to time.
At this point, you can also take out the network install cd if you wish, it is not used again.
