Packages that were added to Scientific Linux

We have added several packages to Scientific Linux that are not found anywhere on the Enterprise releases.

(SL 4.7) 915resolution
Summary : 915resolution is a tool to modify the video BIOS of the 800 and 900 series Intel graphics chipsets. This includes the 845G, 855G, and 865G chipsets, as well as 915G, 915GM, and 945G chipsets. This modification is necessary to allow the display of certain graphics resolutions for an Xorg or XFree86 graphics server.
915resolution's modifications of the BIOS are transient. There is no risk of permanent modification of the BIOS. This also means that 915resolution must be run every time the computer boots inorder for it's changes to take effect.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 4.6) Alpine
Summary : Alpine is a tool for reading, sending, and managing electronic messages. Alpine is the successor to Pine and was developed by Computing & Communications at the University of Washington.
Added because support for pine has ended. This is not installed by default.

apt
Summary : Apt provides a simple, safe way to install and upgrade packages. Apt features complete installation ordering, multiple source capability and several other features.
Added in addition to Yum to provide users and administrators a good way to add, remove and upgrade packages.

(SL 4.4) cfitsio
Summary : CFITSIO is a library of C and FORTRAN subroutines for reading and writing data files in FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) data format
Added for the astonomy community. This is not installed by default.

Added because they are very useful. Not installed by default

(SL 4.3) dropit
Summary : removes directories entries from a PATH shell variable
Added for those script writters who need a easy, consistant way to edit the PATH variable. This is not installed by default.

(SL 4.4) FUSE
Summary : With FUSE it is possible to implement a fully functional filesystem in a userspace program. fuse modules fuse-smb and fuse-sshfs are included as well.
fuse-smb: you can seamlessly browse your network neighbourhood as if it were on your own filesystem. Only when you're accessing a share is a connection made to the remote computer. This also allows users to mount smb shares using kerberos.
fuse-sshfs: A FUSE-filesystem client based on the SSH File Transfer Protocol. On the client side mounting the filesystem is as easy as logging into the server with ssh.
This is not installed by default.

Summary : The Global File System
Added for those users that need or want GFS. Not installed by default.

gv
Summary : A X front-end for the Ghostscript PostScript(TM) interpreter.
Added because it's a nice way to look at postscript documents.

icewm
Summary : Fast and small X11 window manager
Added because we needed a lightweight modern window manager. There are some machines that just don't have much CPU and/or memory, and both KDE and GNOME can really slow these machines down.

(SL 4.1) iwp2100 & ipw2200 firmware
Summary : Firmware for the Intel´┐Ż PRO/Wireless 2100 and 2200 Driver.
Added because we had the network drivers, but not the firmware that went with them. These are installed by default.

(SL 4.4) ipw3945
Summary : ipw3945 firmware, kernel module, and deamon needed to make the Intel ipw3945 wireless work.
Note that the installer does NOT know how to enable the 3945 wireless. You will have to add the starting of the /sbin/ipw3945d in your startup scripts.
This was added because many new laptops have this wireless chipset. This is installed by default.

(SL 4.1) jdk
Summary : This packages is the java sdk from sun.
Added because many developers and users wanted it. Not installed by default.

jpilot
Summary : Jpilot palm pilot desktop software
Added because there was such a large base of jpilot users, and they agreed to keep it up to date.

(SL 4.2) ksh
Summary : Korn Shell 93
Added for those users who want to use it. This is not installed by default.

(SL 4.4) madwifi
Summary : madfifi is the Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi, a linux device driver for 802.11a/b/g universal NIC cards - either Cardbus, PCI or MiniPCI - that use Atheros chipsets (ar5210, ar5211, ar5212).
Currently this is for i386 only.
This was added because many wireless cards use this chipset. This is not installed by default.

Summary : Expanded mp3 support
Added for those users who want mp3 support. This is not installed by default.

ncurses4
Summary : A backwards compatible version of ncurses.
Added because several experiments code needed this version of ncurses.

(SL 4.3) ndiswrapper

Summary : a loadable kernel module that "wraps around" NDIS (Windows network driver API) drivers. This does not work for all drivers, it also does not contain any Windows network drivers.
Added for those users who need to use it. This is not installed by default.

(SL 4.4) numpy
Summary : NumPy derives from the old Numeric code base and can be used as a replacement for Numeric. It also adds the features introduced by Numarray and can also be used to replace Numarray.
Added for the scientific community. This is not installed by default.

openafs
Summary : OpenAFS distributed filesystem
Added because many educational and research centers around the world use AFS as some type of central file system.

pcp
Summary : System-level performance monitoring and performance management.
Added because several experiments use PCP for monitoring servers.

pine
Summary : Commonly used, MIME compliant mail and news reader
Added because about 25% of our users use Pine. There was a very high demand for it.

(SL 4.4) R
Summary : R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It is a GNU project which is similar to the S language and environment. There are some important differences, but much code written for S runs unaltered under R.
Added for the scientific community. This is not installed by default.

(SL 4.3) r1000

Summary : Linux device driver released for RealTek Ethernet controllers RTL8169S/SB/SC, RTL8168B, and RTL8101E
Added for those users who need to use it. This is not installed by default.

readline41
Summary : A library for editing typed in command lines.
Added because other packages depended on it.

(SL 4.8) squashfs
Summary : Squashfs is a compressed read-only filesystem for Linux.
This is not installed by default.

(SL 4.3) tidy

Summary : tidy up sloppy html into nicely formated markup
Added for those users who often have to edit automatically generated html. This is not installed by default.

(SL 4.8) unionfs
Summary : Unionfs builds a stackable unification file system, which can appear to merge the contents of several directories (branches), while keeping their physical content separate.
This is not installed by default.

yum
Summary : RPM installer/updater
Yum is the main program that does security updates for Scientific Linux. It also makes installing and updating packages very easy. Users can decide to use Apt of Yum or both.

(SL 4.2) Yumex

Summary : Graphical Front End to Yum, as well as a replacement to the up2date applet.
Added for those users who want to use a graphical front end for yum. This is not installed by default.

Summary : Plugin's and Utilities to expand yum
Added for those users who want to use it. The one plugin, kernel-module, is built into the S.L. version of yum 2.4. These are not installed by default.
