The example sites are meant to be a starting point so that a site developer can copy this directory and modify it, and easily create their own site.

The example site for Scientific Linux 3.0.2 had signifigant advances to make it even easier. It has scripts that will do all the copying, checks to make sure you have the proper rpm packages before trying to build images, and better documentation.
In short, if you are thinking of creating your own site, you should start with the latest Scientific Linux release, which at the time of this writting is 3.0.2.
